A Legacy 100 Years in the Making
Join us as we celebrate the centennial anniversary of our historic hotel building. Nestled in downtown Sacramento, The Citizen Hotel is a 14-story, 196-room historic landmark. A unique blend of Roaring Twenties character and contemporary style.
Constructed in 1925, the impressive 14 story building was designed by George Sellon, California’s first state architect, known for his signature early 1900s classic style. The building features a brick and Gladding-McBean tile exterior and a French Chateauesque peak. Inside, the elaborate lobby featured decadent marble finishes and stunningly detailed plasterwork.
The statuesque building took downtown Sacramento to new heights. Standing at 216 feet, it was originally the tallest building in town and became known as Sacramento's first skyscraper. Today, it is a State Registered Historic Place.
The building originally housed the California Western States Life Insurance Company, earning it the nickname as the Cal-West building.
In 2008, the building was carefully restored and transformed into The Citizen Hotel. Taking a cue from the city it serves, the hotel's interiors were designed to feature curated political art and décor inspired by the 20th-century U.S. political scene.
In 2011, the Sacramento Art Deco Society presented the current owners a preservation award for their 2008 restoration. Today it is a beacon of style and grandeur among the Sacramento skyline, attracting an impressive clientele of hotel and restaurant guests.
